I had a fun conversation with a guy I met online today, who had seen my recent holiday posts on Instagram and wanted to know just how I get to spend so much time travelling.
He reached out to me, and we got chatting.
He’s run a traditional business for over 20 years, but it turns out he’d never heard about online businesses before.
So I explained to him about the freedom my online business gives me 🎒🗺️🌎
Since I can run my business from just a laptop, I am free to travel and work anywhere in the world, whenever I want (which I’ve been doing a lot of lately, as you’ll see at the end of this post).

He was curious to know just how it worked…
So I told him about one particular type of online business, great for people who love to travel:
I explained how I earn some of my income by running video ads on YouTube to promote & sell other people’s products & services online.
And in return, I get paid a percentage of any sales they make from the people I’ve referred (it’s called Affiliate Marketing).
He thought you’d need loads of fancy equipment to do it, but that’s really not the case! 🤳👩🏼💻
He couldn’t believe it when I said I film the ads myself using only my iPhone, a $15 selfie stick tripod and a $30 lapel mic 😲
Here are a few pictures of a “home video studio” that I set up in my bedroom to film YouTube video ads:
You can see the selfie stick tripod, and the pile of books I used to stand it on my bed – so hi-tech! 😉
(Note: All of this recording kit fits easily in a backpack.)
In the next picture, you’ll see my laptop (deliberately small, compact & easily transportable) on the bed too. That’s where I write my ad scripts, so I can rehearse what I’m going to say before recording. That’s also what I use to edit the videos after I’ve recorded them (to remove all the mistakes!).
I’ve been doing YouTube advertising for a while now, and sometimes use this lighting kit to help make sure I’m clearly lit in the video:
But… actually, the video ad that has made me the most money so far was one I recorded in my friend’s apartment in Washington DC, while she was out at work, with just my phone and the selfie stick on a stand!
No fancy lights, no fancy cameras, and I don’t think I even used the lapel mic for that one either.
Affiliate marketing businesses are a great way to earn money while being able to travel
Because you’re promoting someone else’s products, you don’t have the hassle of creating or manufacturing your own products, storing inventory, packaging & sending product out, dealing with customer inquiries, complaints & refunds – the company you affiliate for does all that.
But also, once you learn how to market & sell online, you can automate the process of finding customers & making sales – using just your smartphone, laptop & the internet!
Here’s how it works:
- Film the video ad on your phone & upload it to YouTube
- Build a sales funnel that converts prospects into customers (two web-pages and a sequence of automated emails)
- Set up an ad campaign on Google Ads that displays your video ad in front of the right people on YouTube
- Direct anyone who’s interested from your ad to your sales funnel, where they’re introduced to the other company’s product offer
- …and let the sales roll in while you’re off travelling & having fun… happy days!
All this means that, once you’ve set this up and got it working (a simple task, but not necessarily an easy one, because there are new skills you’ll need master)… money’s dropping into your bank account, without you having to do anything more.
And as long as you continue running the advertising campaigns, the money keeps flowing in.
How cool is that??!
You’ve freed up your time, because you’re no longer trading your time to earn money…
And there’s no limit to how much you can earn!
Some of the people I work with earn 5 figures a month through affiliate commissions alone. And if you look on the internet, you’ll find there are people out there earning six, seven, even eight figures…
With over 4.5bn people on the internet and over $7bn dollars being spent online every year, there’s plenty of potential to be tapped into – plenty for all of us to have a share.
With even just 0.001% of that very large pie you can make a very tidy income

Leaving the corporate world and starting my own online business was the best decision I ever made.

Suddenly I discovered what it was like not to have to set an alarm to wake up, battle with the morning commute or stumble bleary-eyed into an office every day pumped full of caffeine.
Sitting in the garden in the sunshine, listening to the birds and enjoying the feeling of the warm sun on my skin, I knew this was my opportunity to choose a different path.
I started my online business training in 2019 and knew I’d never go back to working for someone else ever again. The freedom, the control, the creativity, the people I’ve met from all over the world… I’d found my tribe, and finally felt understood. These are people who share my values of living life to the full and doing work that’s meaningful.

Having explored & experimented with various different business models (affiliate marketing, consulting, coaching, training), I’ve fallen into coaching as my primary business model of choice, but am also still dabbling with other income streams on the side, including affiliate marketing, consulting & selling my photographs.
My work gets me out of bed in the morning, lights me up and puts a spring in my step. I find serving people and making new connections all over the world extremely fulfilling. And even better – it pays enough to cover my modest lifestyle, while only needing to work 2-3 days a week, so I can spend the rest of my time learning, studying, visiting friends & family and playing with my camera.
